Abstract

Este artigo possui o mesmo título da tese defendida em concurso público para professor titular de jornalismo da Universidade Federal Fluminense. Aborda, em linhas gerais, alguns conceitos e idéias discutidos naquele trabalho e procurará mostrar que os jornais, ao selecionar, ao hierarquizar, ao escolher o lugar na página a ser ocupado pela notícia, mantém como essencial a dialética lembrar e esquecer. Aprisionando na palavra escrita aquilo que deve ser lembrado e condenado a zona de sombras e de silêncios outros temas que devem ser esquecidos, os jornais se transformam num dos "senhores da memória" da sociedade.
