ResumoO texto procura reconstruir a trajetória de Ben-Hur, saga literária de Lew Wallace, adaptada para o teatro, o cinema e o cartoon, até se trans- formar no Brasil em opereta e circo-teatro. Com base nos documentos de censura prévia do Departamento de Diversões Públicas do Estado de São Paulo, existentes na Escola de Comunicações e Artes da USP, procura questionar o papel da censura na produção teatral brasileira.

Resumen
El texto busca reconstruir el trayecto de Ben-Hur, saga literaria de Lew Wallace, adaptada al texto, cine y al cartoon, hasta convertirse en Brasil en opereta y circo-teatro. Basado en los documentos de previa censura del Departamento de Diversiones Públicas del Estado de São Paulo, que están en la Escola de Comunicações e Artes de la USP. El texto busca, así, cuestionar el papel de la censura en la producción teatral brasileíña.

Abstract This paper tries to rebuild the trajectory of Ben-Hur, literary saga by Lew Wallace, adapted to the stage, screen and cartoon until, in Brazil, it became operetta and circus-theater. Based on previous censorship documents of the São Paulo State Public Entertainment Department,kept in Escola de Comunicações e Artes of USP, it examines the cen- sorship role on the Brazilian theater production.
