Abstract

This paper reflects the life history method, from a proximity communication approach, further elaborated in-depth as a theoretical-methodological frame of reference in the thesis “Proximity and confessions: experiences in homelessness and building of oneself. Life histories and resistance in Historic Downtown Salvador, Bahia”. At the interception of these paradoxical methodological frameworks, the aspects of “the meeting of worlds” and “the truth of the other” were highlighted, thus enabling an assessment of the role assigned to sensitivity, respect for the other and the fair extent to which one places oneself, while also valuing the dialogic contexts between narrators and the researcher embodied in qualitative research.

    Doctor in Culture and Society (IHAC/UFBA), with a doctoral internship at the University of Beira Interior, Portugal. She is a University Analyst at the State University of Bahia (Universidade do Estado da Bahia - UNEB), Coordinator of the Scientific Production Center of the Center for Research in Education and Regional Development at UNEB, and a member of the LOGOS Research Group - Strategic Communication, Brand and Culture (UFBA). She develops research on the following topics: Culture and Identity; Daily life, culture, and sociability; Community and proximity. Communication.

    Associate Professor at the Federal University of Bahia (Universidade Federal da Bahia - FACOM/UFBA) and at the Graduate Program in Culture and Society (Poscultura). Doctor and Master in Contemporary Communication and Culture (UFBA), with a doctoral internship at the University of Paris III – Sorbonne Nouvelle (2007). He develops research on the following topics: public communication, discourse analysis, place branding, theory, and research in communication policies, culture, and human rights. He is the leader of the LOGOS Research Group - Strategic Communication, Brand and Culture (UFBA), certified by CNPQ in 2014.

    J. Paulo Serra holds a graduation in Philosophy, and a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences. He is Full Professor at the Department of Communication, Philosophy and Politics of University of Beira Interior (UBI), Portugal, senior researcher in the unit LabCom - Communication and Arts, and Vice-rector. He authored the books Information as Utopia (1998), Information and Sense (2003), and Communication Theory Handbook (2008), co-authored the book Information and Persuasion on the Web (2009), edited the book Rhetoric and Politics (2015), and co-edited several books, the last one being Television and new media: From production to audiences (2021). He has also published several book chapters and articles in books and journals, both in Portugal and abroad.
